The doubt in Australia of one hectare being enough for your family homestead is invalid because of this one tree tagasaste. You want a horse, a milking cow , a few sheep and chickens right? It is true that even on the very best land and it's climate in Australian one hectare would normally only be enough for one cow or 10 sheep; and all the best land has already been picked out long ago by pastoralists for producing meat. So family homesteads realistically only have second to last grade land and it's climate to begin with. My one hectare homestead is on the worst land around here - desert with trees is one way I've heard it desribed; the rainfall is half of that on the coast. It is acid around 5.5; the acidity is also indicated by the type of trees as white cypress and apple box are found where it is more alkaline and black cypress and bloodwood which is what grows here are found where it is more acid. Only 12 Kilometers from found here is found! The: best black "heavy country" - on a large cattle-farm.
By Yet up my goal is to have up my own horse in three years time, and I am preparing to have 300 tagasaste trees on my one hectare - half or all of them can be arranged around the perimeter; a horse will be shinny and in very good condition with strong hooves able to ride unshod with a daily feed of 16 pounds of tagasaste. Here I of've Already succeeded with 20 Growing mother tagasaste trees, arranged harmonically of course , within a 1/2 acre decagon garden, over the 3 driest summers; I've had to replace several, and some more than once, so they are at different ages.
